Anita Ekberg: Life, Career, Movies, and Legacy

Anita Ekberg was a Swedish actress and model who became one of the most recognizable international film stars of the 1950s and 1960s. Although she appeared in numerous Hollywood and European productions, her name became permanently connected with Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960). Her portrayal of Sylvia and the unforgettable Trevi Fountain sequence transformed her into an enduring symbol of European cinema and 1960s glamour.

Born in Malmö, Sweden, Ekberg began her public career through beauty competitions before moving toward modeling and acting. Her striking appearance helped her gain attention in Hollywood, but her career eventually took a more distinctive direction in Italy. Over time, she became particularly associated with Fellini, Rome, and the larger mythology of postwar international cinema.

Early Life and Family

Anita Ekberg was born Kerstin Anita Marianne Ekberg on September 29, 1931, in Malmö, Sweden. She was the sixth of eight children in her family. Her father, August, was a doctor, while her mother was named Alvah. Growing up in Sweden, Ekberg initially had no established connection to the international film industry.

Her path toward entertainment began with beauty competitions. She won the title of Miss Malmö and later Miss Sweden, achievements that brought her greater public attention. She subsequently traveled to the United States to participate in the Miss Universe competition. Although she did not ultimately become Miss Universe, the trip helped launch her career in American entertainment.

From Beauty Queen to Hollywood Actress

After arriving in the United States in the early 1950s, Ekberg began working as a model and performer. Hollywood studios recognized her distinctive appearance and gave her opportunities in films, although many of her early roles emphasized glamour more than dramatic acting.

One of her early movies was The Golden Blade (1953), an adventure film featuring Rock Hudson. She also appeared in Abbott and Costello Go to Mars in the same year. During the following years, she worked in a range of comedies, adventure films, and dramas.

Her early Hollywood period included appearances in movies such as Artists and Models, Hollywood or Bust, Zarak, Paris Holiday, and Call Me Bwana. She also worked with major performers of the era, including Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope, and Frank Sinatra.

Anita Ekberg in War and Peace

A significant opportunity came in 1956 when Ekberg appeared in King Vidor’s War and Peace. The large-scale adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s novel featured an impressive international cast, including Henry Fonda and Audrey Hepburn.

Ekberg played Hélène, an important character within the story. The role demonstrated that she could be used for more than the purely decorative parts that had characterized several of her earlier Hollywood appearances. However, despite gaining visibility through major productions, she had not yet achieved the lasting international fame that would come with La Dolce Vita.

Marriage to Anthony Steel

Ekberg’s personal life frequently attracted media attention. In 1956, she married British actor Anthony Steel. Steel was a prominent British film star during the 1950s, but after their marriage he moved toward Hollywood and experienced professional difficulties.

The marriage was turbulent and ended in divorce in 1959. Their relationship and highly publicized disagreements contributed to the intense press attention surrounding Ekberg during this period. Later accounts connected some of the atmosphere surrounding their relationship with the world of celebrity and paparazzi depicted in La Dolce Vita.

Ekberg later married actor Rik Van Nutter in 1963. That marriage lasted until 1975. Her relationships remained a frequent subject of entertainment journalism throughout her career.

The Role That Changed Everything: La Dolce Vita

The defining moment of Anita Ekberg’s career came in 1960, when Federico Fellini cast her as Sylvia in La Dolce Vita. The film starred Marcello Mastroianni as Marcello Rubini, a journalist moving through Rome’s glamorous but increasingly empty social world.

Ekberg’s role was not the largest in terms of screen time, but it became the most memorable part of her career. Sylvia is presented as a glamorous American movie star visiting Rome. Her larger-than-life personality and physical presence fit Fellini’s satirical vision of celebrity culture.

The movie became internationally famous, and Ekberg became inseparable from one of its most recognizable images.

The Famous Trevi Fountain Scene

The Trevi Fountain sequence in La Dolce Vita is the scene most strongly associated with Anita Ekberg. In it, Sylvia enters Rome’s Trevi Fountain during a night of celebration, while Marcello Mastroianni eventually follows her into the water.

The scene became one of the defining images in international cinema. Ekberg’s performance, the Roman setting, Fellini’s direction, and Nino Rota’s broader contribution to the film’s atmosphere helped create an image that continued to be referenced for decades.

The sequence also established Ekberg as a major international cinematic symbol. Even people who had never watched her other movies often recognized her because of the Trevi Fountain scene.

It is important to note that entering the Trevi Fountain is prohibited in modern Rome. The popularity of the movie scene has nevertheless made the location an important destination for film history enthusiasts.

Other Important Films

After La Dolce Vita, Ekberg continued working in international cinema. One notable project was ** Boccaccio ’70 (1962)**, in which she appeared in Federico Fellini’s segment, Le Tentazioni del Dottor Antonio. The project also featured major Italian star Sophia Loren.

Ekberg also appeared in ** 4 for Texas (1963)** alongside Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Other notable credits from her career included Screaming Mimi (1958), Valerie (1957), and Back from Eternity (1956).

Although none of these later roles matched the cultural impact of Sylvia in La Dolce Vita, they demonstrate that Ekberg maintained an international acting career across different genres.

Relationship With Federico Fellini

Federico Fellini played a crucial role in Ekberg’s lasting cinematic identity. While Hollywood had largely presented her as a glamorous star, Fellini used her appearance and public image as part of a broader artistic and satirical concept.

Fellini reportedly saw qualities in Ekberg that allowed him to create a character representing celebrity, fantasy, and the attraction of glamorous modern life. Their professional relationship continued beyond La Dolce Vita. Ekberg later appeared in Fellini’s Boccaccio ’70, and she also participated in Intervista (1987), where she reunited on screen with Marcello Mastroianni.

Their connection became an important part of both their legacies. Fellini’s films helped preserve Ekberg’s image beyond the normal lifespan of a Hollywood celebrity.

Later Years and Life in Italy

Unlike many American-based Hollywood stars, Ekberg eventually made Italy her home. She lived near Rome for many years and remained connected with the country’s film culture.

Her later life was considerably quieter than the glamorous period of the 1950s and 1960s. Reports described financial and personal difficulties, and after problems involving her home, she eventually moved into a care facility near Rome. In 2011, she sought financial assistance from the Fellini Foundation.

Despite the difficulties of her later years, Ekberg remained associated with one of the most famous scenes in movie history. Her image continued to appear in discussions of classic European cinema, Fellini, Rome, and the cultural history of the 1960s.

Anita Ekberg’s Death

Anita Ekberg died in Rome on January 11, 2015, at the age of 83. Her lawyer confirmed that she had been suffering from a series of illnesses and had recently been hospitalized.

Her death generated international tributes, particularly because of her importance to La Dolce Vita. Although her career included many films, the cultural importance of Sylvia meant that her legacy was closely connected with Fellini’s masterpiece.

Anita Ekberg’s Legacy

Anita Ekberg’s legacy is unusual because one performance became significantly more famous than much of her broader filmography. Her work before and after La Dolce Vita covered Hollywood comedies, adventure movies, thrillers, dramas, and European productions, but the image of Sylvia in the Trevi Fountain became her defining contribution to cinema.

Her career also reflects the changing nature of international stardom during the postwar era. A Swedish beauty queen could travel to the United States, enter Hollywood, work with major American stars, and ultimately find her most enduring artistic identity in Italian cinema.

Today, Anita Ekberg is remembered primarily as the star of one of Federico Fellini’s most celebrated films. The Trevi Fountain sequence remains a landmark moment in movie history, while her career demonstrates how beauty, celebrity, international cinema, and auteur filmmaking could combine to create an enduring screen icon.
